Hortiperl is used as a substrate for seedlings and color plants. It is also used in hydroponics.
Perlite is a generic name for an amorphous volcanic alumina-silicate rock that expands by a factor of 4-20 when rapidly heated to 1400-1800 °F (760-980 °C). The material is a brilliant white when it expands, due to the reflection of trapped bubbles. - Science
It's Not Styrofoam:
Many people think it is made out of Styrofoam, but it is made of volcanic glass that is mined and then heated in ovens until it 'pops' into a round, white material that allows more air around the roots of plants and helps to retain water. This white lightweight puffy material contains tiny holes on the surface, which absorb and hold moisture and nutrients then slowly releases them.How to apply perlite:

Mix equal parts of perlite, compost, and peat moss (moisten peat moss with water first).

Seeds: Fill planters or pots ¾ full of the mixture and plant your seedlings.

Plants: Fill in the potting mix and firm it down gently with your hands
Note: Less water will be needed while using perlite in your soil mix.
